A new ecosystem has emerged on the dried seabed of the Aral Sea

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Aral Sea was the largest lake in Central Asia (Fig. 1). Starting from the second half of this century, as a result of the drying up of the sea, a new desert ecosystem—the Aralkum Desert—was formed at its bottom (Fig. 2). This area is currently considered one of the largest anthropogenic desert ecosystems in Central Asia. As a result of the decrease in sea level, more than 60,000 km2 of wetlands have turned into land.

On April 13, 2026, Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan was officially recognized as the largest museum of Islamic civilization in the world, receiving the prestigious title from Guinness World Records.

The solemn award ceremony was attended by the official representative and Şeyda Subaşı Gemici, judge of Guinness World Records, who confirmed that the Center meets all international standards.

The event was also attended by the architects, planners, designers and builders who made a significant contribution to the project’s realization. The award was presented to the members of the Center's Scientific Council.
